The promotion made the announcement on Monday.

“Due to the current state and national restrictions on public gatherings and travel, UFC 251 originally scheduled for Perth, western Australia on Sunday, June 7, has been postponed,” UFC officials wrote in a statement.

“UFC looks forward to returning to Perth in the near future with a PPV event in partnership with Tourism Western Australia. Fans can register their interest to receive date, ticketing and bout information at UFC.com/Perth.”

The card that would take place on June 6 in the United States was supposed to be headlined by a featherweight title fight rematch between current champion Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway. Though the fight was never signed, the expectation was like Volkanovski would defend his belt against Holloway on home soil.

Unfortunately, the global pandemic has basically stop international travel, which is why the UFC has started putting together plans for “Fight Island” — a location where the promotion plans to maintain cards for fighters outside of the U.S. starting sometime in June.

While UFC 251 live will no longer take place in Australia, the card is still expected to take place on June 6 at a different location most likely in the United States. There have been many whispered fights confirmed for that card including a bantamweight showdown between former champion Cody Garbrandt and Raphael Assuncao.

The UFC has not officially announced a location for that show as of now, or any other cards outside of the three upcoming events slated for Jacksonville, Fla. on 9th May, 13th May and 16th May. There is Another card which is planned for May 23 but again, the UFC has not announced a location or venue for that show.

UFC 251: champ Valentina Shevchenko on the mend, eyes late August date on ‘Fight Island’

Calderwood vs Shevchenko for UFC 251 fight
Count UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko among those willing to take a trip to “Fight Island” for UFC 251.

Actually, count her among those who may end up insisting her next fight takes place on the mysterious facility UFC president Dana White has recurrently mentioned the company is recently constructing to house international fights during the present ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic.

“From the very, very first second when I heard about the island, it was already my favorite idea,” Shevchenko told MMA Junkie Radio. “Yes, I definitely would love to fight there.”

The Kyrgyzstani-born champ recently lives and trains herself in Las Vegas, but it doesn’t take a long look through her social media to realize she has a passion for traveling, and exotic locales certainly suit with her taste, especially those of the tropical variety. To repair a torn MCL, there are three weeks that are removed from a surgery. Shevchenko (19-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) said that she’s healing up quickly and looking to rebook her planned title defense against Joanne Calderwood (14-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC), which was actually  hoped to take place at UFC 251 on June 6 in Australia.

“Now I hope it’s going to happen sometime in the end of August, and why not – why not on the island?” Shevchenko asked. “It can be like a double great thing, and definitely, I love the idea of the island. I love it because on the island is going to be everything that a fighter needs, right? Because it’s going to be built specially for the UFC fights, for the UFC fighters. That’s why we will have all facilities that we need, and it’s going to be very easy to train, very easy to do everything.”

Details info of the facility which include its place, remain scarce, with a tight-lipped Dana White rejecting to offer up much more information about this. But his primary teases have made it sound like something similar to a resort for UFC athletes. To attend, they’ll just have to be willing to take part in a cagefight rather than sit through a timeshare presentation.

Of course, the UFC’s whole match schedule is still a bit uncertain at this time. The promotion wish to be running live events again beginning May 9, but regulators could very well step in between now and then, much as they did to scrap UFC 249 from this weekend’s docket.

So for now, Shevchenko will just maintain her training through Nevada’s stay-at-home orders, which currently last until April 30. Shevchenko admits about her training which hasn not been so terribly impacted by the quarantine that is in place over most of the U.S. after all, she’s always trained herself in a small circle that includes her sister, Antonina, and her coach Pavel Fedotov, rather than a massive fight team or super camp.

Still, Shevchenko said keeping this regimen all through a fight camp would have some impact on her ability to rotate through different partners in her training sessions, due to the constantly changing styles she faces from different bodies, she says keeps her sharp .

“Definitely it’s not affecting me as much as, for example, other fighters, but from the other side, yes, it’s affecting me because I need to use not just one training partner,” Shevchenko said. “I used to use two switching partners in a session because this is what I do, combining the styles, and for me, it’s necessary to have all the styles going around me to be able to switch.”

“I have to be able to switch my mind to another work, to another fight strategy. This can affect me because now you will have only one training partner, and the best-case scenario two training partners, but definitely it’s not affecting me that much as other fighters because this is the kind of lifestyle that I had, like training with one team, and it’s all about my internal preparation and all these things. Definitely, for me it’s not difficult because I’m a person that adapts.”

Obviously, a lot can happen between now and late August, and most people around the world hope we’ll be in a different situation by then in terms of coronavirus concerns. In the meantime, Shevchneko said that her rehab is going as planned this far and she’s targeting for that late August date – and that ‘Fight Island’ location.

“I would love to have my training camp over there before the fight, to fight there, and actually to stay and recover after the fight on the island because I imagine it’s going to be super beautiful and a super nice place,” Shevchenko said.

Coronavirus crisis: UFC 251 in Perth could be next show postponed

UFC 251
Perth’s UFC 251 event in June is expected to join the long list of sporting postponements caused by the coronavirus pandemic but it’s likely to be rescheduled.

It was hoped Australia’s featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski would make his first title defence at UFC 251, though no bout had been finalised.

An announcement on the postponement of UFC 251, scheduled for Western Australia’s RAC Arena on June 7, could be made in the next week.

As a prestigious pay-per-view event it is expected to be rescheduled for later in 2020 or some time in 2021, rather than be cancelled.

The show’s co-main event between women’s flyweight title holder Valentina Shevchenko and Joanne Calderwood has already fallen through after the champion withdrew due to a leg injury.

The UFC on Tuesday announced events scheduled for Nebraska (April 25), Oklahoma City (May 2) and San Diego (May 16) would not proceed due to state and county restrictions on public gatherings.

UFC 250 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, (May 9) won’t go ahead due to the closing of Ibirapuera Gymnasium for the installation of a field hospital through September.

The UFC is still proposing to hold an event somewhere in the United States on May 9, when American fighters will be used.

There is expected to be an event on a yet to be announced island in either June or July, which would feature fighters from outside the US.

Report about UFC 251 cancel

The UFC authority has officially pulled the plug on four more scheduled upcoming events due to the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, though another might still be in the works.

The event which are canceled by the UFC authority are Lincoln on April 25, UFC Oklahoma City on May 2, UFC 250 on May 9 and UFC San Diego on May 16 was announced by the UFC authority on Monday. Full refunds to at least the first two events will be given to fans who already bought their tickets.

The cancellations of all UFC event are somewhat surprising given how obstinate UFC president Dana White has been in trying to hold events despite the ongoing pandemic crisis all over the world, he try a lot to move UFC 249 on April 18 to California tribal land in a circumvention of state mandates. The UFC event was eventually postponed after broadcast partner ESPN stepped in it.

White has also claimed about his fighter’s health security that he has secured a private island to hold the events with full health security, but has yet to reveal where that island actually is.

Despite all of those efforts, the UFC has not held an event since UFC Brasilia on March 14, 2020. The last time a UFC fan was allowed into an event was on March 7 at UFC 248 in Las Vegas, US.
UFC could still be trying to hold their events

While another month’s worth of all UFC events has been called off, that doesn’t quite mean the UFC will be holding no events at all in that span.

UFC 249 still remains a tiny possibility, as White, the UFC president, has said that he hopes to hold the event on May 9 in UFC 250’s place. After that, he also said he hopes to hold weekly events going forward with precautions under this COVID 19 crisis. Therefore, this could be the more of a clearing of the previous schedule by the authority to set up new events rather than the UFC conceding the month.
Seven UFC events have been already called off

The following UFC events have now been called off of cancel due to the coronavirus:

• UFC London on March 21

• UFC Columbus on March 28

• UFC Portland on April 11

• UFC Lincoln on April 25

• UFC Oklahoma City on May 2

• UFC 250 on May 9

• UFC San Diego on May 16

All of the future events which is organized by UFC remain up in the air after being indefinitely postponed alongside with the original UFC 249 postponement. That includes two big UFC event and which are UFC 251 in Perth, Australia, on June 6 and UFC 252 in Las Vegas on July 11.

Adding to the seriousness of the brutal situation was UFC welterweight Lyman Good testing positive for the COVID 19 earlier this month, which put a bit of a hole into the idea that all MMA fighters or officials can be completely protected during the event from both contracting the illness and spreading it to others in this situation.
Amanda Nunes has already pulled out of UFC 249 on May 9, 2020

While the UFC authority is still trying their best to hold UFC 249 on May 9, one of its biggest names has already said she won’t be a part of it.

Double champion Amanda Nunes told CBS Sports earlier on Monday that she is out:

“Actually, I’m not fighting May 9,” Nunes said. “I’m going to fight, I don’t know yet. I don’t think this is the right time for me right now to fight. Let this coronavirus pass a little bit so I can at least have a full camp. We can maybe see around June, let’s see what is going to happen. But I’m not fighting.”
